E-Way Bill Portal Registration

An e-way bill is required for transporting goods valued over ₹50,000 under GST.
It must be generated electronically on the official e-Way Bill Portal and carried with the goods during transit.

Three main user types interact with e-Way Bills: registered suppliers, transporters (registered or unregistered),
and unregistered suppliers. Registration on the portal is mandatory to generate e-way bills.

Prerequisites for Registration

  • GSTIN of the registered taxpayer or transporter (if applicable)
  • Mobile number that is already registered with the GST system
  • Valid email ID (recommended) and basic business details

Step-by-step Registration (Quick Guide)

  1. Visit the official e-Way Bill Portal (ewaybillgst.gov.in).
  2. Click on “Register” (for new users) or “Enrol” as a Transporter if you are a transporter.
  3. Enter your GSTIN (if registered) and the mobile number registered with GST.
  4. Verify the OTP sent to the registered mobile number to confirm your identity.
  5. Fill in the required business/transport details (PAN, business name, address, transporter details if applicable).
  6. Create login credentials (username & password) and complete the form.
  7. After submission, note down your Transporter ID (if created) or portal login for future logins and e-way bill generation.

Note: Transporters who are not GST-registered will receive a Transporter ID upon enrolling, which they can use to generate e-way bills.

Registration for GST-Unregistered Transporters

A transporter (even if not GST-registered) must generate an e-Way Bill when the value of goods moved:
exceeds ₹50,000 for a single supplier or the aggregate value of all consignments in a vehicle exceeds ₹50,000.

What is a Transporter ID?

Unregistered transporters receive a unique Transporter ID upon enrolment on the e-Way Bill portal.
This ID is used in place of a GSTIN on every e-Way Bill the transporter generates. Enrolment also issues a unique username to access the portal.

Quick process:

  • Enroll on the e-Way Bill portal as a transporter.
  • Receive a Transporter ID and portal username.
  • Use the Transporter ID when creating e-Way Bills for consignments.

Action When Goods Are Received from an Unregistered Supplier

If a registered recipient receives goods from an unregistered supplier, the recipient must follow e-Way Bill procedures
as if they were the supplier and generate the e-Way Bill for the movement of those goods.

Note: Transporters without a GSTIN should enrol before transporting consignments that meet the e-Way Bill threshold, otherwise the consignments may be stopped for verification.

Documents Required for E-Way Bill Registration (India)

The exact documents/details depend on whether you are a registered taxpayer, a registered transporter, or an unregistered transporter.
Below are the commonly required documents and information for enrolment on the e-Way Bill portal.

For Registered Taxpayers / Businesses

  • GSTIN (must be active)
  • Mobile number registered with the GST system (for OTP verification)
  • Legal / Trade name and PAN of the entity
  • Business address and contact details (email & phone)
  • Bank account details (optional but recommended)
  • Authorized signatory details (name, email, mobile)

For Registered Transporters

  • GSTIN (if registered as a business)
  • Transporter name, PAN and business address
  • Mobile number registered with GST (for OTP)
  • Vehicle registration numbers (optional at enrolment; can be added later)

For Unregistered Transporters (to obtain Transporter ID)

  • Valid mobile number (for OTP verification)
  • Name and address of the transporter (proprietor/firm)
  • PAN of the proprietor/firm (if available) — some portals ask for identity proof
  • ID proof (Aadhaar / Voter ID / Driving Licence) — as required by local procedure
  • Vehicle registration numbers (you can add later; not always mandatory at enrolment)

Quick tips: Ensure the mobile number used for enrolment is already linked with the GST profile (for registered taxpayers). Keep scanned copies/photos of identity and address proofs ready for faster enrolment.

Other Useful Documents/Details

  • Sample invoice / challan format used by your business (for reference)
  • List of vehicle registration numbers (to add to transporter profile)
  • Authorized user details (emails & mobile numbers) for team access

Note: Requirements can vary slightly based on portal updates or state-specific rules. If in doubt, visit the official e-Way Bill Portal or consult your local GST helpdesk.
